    Summary

Tumor mapping using a modified tattoo solution helps surgeons define cancer margins after treatment. This technique accurately visualizes tumor response to chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Surgical Oncology
    • Medical Imaging

    Background:

    • Accurate tumor delineation is critical for effective cancer treatment, especially in head and neck cancers.
    • Non-surgical therapies like chemotherapy and radiotherapy can significantly alter tumor size and location, complicating surgical planning.
    • Novel methods are needed to precisely map residual tumor sites after neoadjuvant treatments.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a modified tattoo solution for "tumor mapping" in patients with head and neck cancers.
    • To assess the duration of tattoo visibility following different non-surgical antineoplastic therapies.
    • To determine if tattoo mapping aids in surgical resection and response assessment.

    Main Methods:

    • Eleven consecutive patients with oropharyngeal, hypopharyngeal, and oral cavity cancers underwent "tumor mapping" with a modified tattoo solution.
    • Tattoo visibility was assessed at various time points after induction chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy.
    • The impact of tattoo mapping on surgical margin determination and response recognition was analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • The modified tattoo solution was clearly visible in all assessed patients.
    • Tattoo outlines remained visible at 7 weeks post-chemotherapy, 14 weeks post-chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and 12-16 weeks post-radiotherapy.
    • Tumor mapping facilitated the establishment of appropriate resection margins for diminished tumors and identified non-responsive tumors.

    Conclusions:

    • Modified tattoo solution "tumor mapping" is a viable technique for head and neck cancers.
    • This method provides durable visual guidance for surgical resection after neoadjuvant therapy.
    • Tumor mapping improves the accuracy of surgical margins and aids in assessing treatment response.
