    Summary

    Aqueous humor from retinoblastoma eyes significantly promotes new blood vessel growth (angiogenesis). However, cultured retinoblastoma cells lose this ability over time, suggesting early-stage tumors are more angiogenic.

    Background:

    • Retinoblastoma is a pediatric eye cancer.
    • Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, is crucial for tumor growth.
    • The role of angiogenesis factors in retinoblastoma is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the angiogenesis activity of aqueous humor and cultured retinoblastoma cells.
    • To determine if retinoblastoma cells in culture retain their angiogenic potential.

    Main Methods:

    • Aqueous humor from retinoblastoma eyes and cell cultures were analyzed.
    • Capillary endothelial cell migration assays were used to assess angiogenesis activity.
    • Chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assays were employed for neovascularization studies.

    Main Results:

    • Aqueous humor from 90% of retinoblastoma eyes stimulated endothelial cell migration, versus 25% of controls.
