    Background:

    • Homelessness is a significant social issue.
    • Access to mental health services is a concern for homeless populations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the prevalence of psychological illnesses among homeless individuals in an emergency shelter.
    • To examine the relationship between mental health policy and the needs of the homeless population.

    Main Methods:

    • Interviewed 78 homeless individuals (men, women, and children) at an emergency shelter.
    • Collected data on psychiatric diagnoses and prior psychiatric hospitalizations.

    Main Results:

    • 91% received primary psychiatric diagnoses.
    • 40% had psychoses, 29% chronic alcoholism, 21% personality disorders.
    • One-third had previous psychiatric hospitalizations.

    Conclusions:

    • Emergency shelters are serving as de facto institutions for the mentally ill.
    • Current mental health policies may be failing to adequately serve the homeless population.
    • There is a critical need for integrated mental health services for homeless individuals.
