    Summary

    The antitumor drug mitomycin can cause hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious condition characterized by anemia, low platelets, and kidney failure. Patients receiving mitomycin require close monitoring for HUS development.

    Background:

    • Mitomycin is an antitumor agent used in chemotherapy.

    Observation:

    • Four patients treated with mitomycin developed microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and renal failure.
    • Autopsies revealed kidney microangiopathy consistent with HUS, including glomerular capillary thrombosis and arterial intimal proliferation.

    Findings:

    • Mitomycin administration was strongly associated with the development of HUS in these patients.
    • HUS was a significant contributing factor to mortality in the observed cases.

    • Healthcare providers should carefully monitor patients undergoing mitomycin treatment for signs of drug-induced HUS.
    • Increased vigilance is crucial as mitomycin use becomes more widespread in cancer therapy.
