    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Dermatology

    Background:

    • Acne and hirsutism in women are often associated with androgen excess.
    • Hormonal imbalances, including elevated testosterone and androstenedione, are implicated in these conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate hormonal profiles in women with acne and/or hirsutism.
    • To evaluate the efficacy of cyproterone acetate in treating these conditions.

    Main Methods:

    • Measured plasma testosterone (T), androstenedione (A), FSH, LH, PRL, and urinary 17-CS in 152 women.
    • Compared hormonal levels to controls.
    • Assessed treatment outcomes with cyproterone acetate.

    Main Results:

    • Significantly increased mean plasma levels of T, A, LH, PRL, and urinary 17-CS were observed in patients compared to controls.
    • Elevated T and/or A were found in 59% of cases.
    • Hirsutism improved in 64% and acne in 84% of patients treated with cyproterone acetate.

    Conclusions:

    • Women with acne and/or hirsutism frequently exhibit elevated androgens and other hormonal abnormalities.
    • Cyproterone acetate demonstrates significant efficacy in managing both hirsutism and acne in affected women.
