    Bioengineering enables physically disabled patients with end-stage renal failure to successfully perform continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) at home. This innovation overcomes previous limitations for individuals with severe physical impairments.

    Background:

    • Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is a vital home dialysis treatment for end-stage renal failure.
    • The procedure presents significant challenges for physically disabled and non-compliant patients.

    Observation:

    • Two patients with severe physical disabilities (rheumatoid arthritis and Volkmann's ischaemic contracture) were assessed for CAPD suitability.
    • Previous limitations excluded such patients from effective home dialysis.

    Findings:

    • Bioengineering solutions were developed and implemented to assist patients in performing CAPD.
    • Both patients successfully managed their CAPD treatments independently with the aid of these bioengineering adaptations.
