    This study investigated whether shock with poor peripheral perfusion leads to glaucoma. Researchers found no evidence of glaucomatous changes in the optic disk or visual field in patients who experienced such shock episodes.

    Area of Science:

    Background:

    • Shock, particularly with poor peripheral tissue perfusion, can cause systemic complications.
    • Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy often associated with elevated intraocular pressure.

    Observation:

    • A prospective study was conducted on 18 patients who had survived at least one episode of shock with poor peripheral tissue perfusion.
    • A total of 26 distinct shock episodes were analyzed in these patients.

    Findings:

    • No glaucomatous changes in the optic disk were observed in any of the patients.
    • No glaucomatous changes in the visual field were detected in any of the patients.

    Implications:

    • The findings suggest that shock with poor peripheral perfusion may not be a direct cause of glaucomatous optic neuropathy.
    • Further research is needed to fully understand the long-term ocular effects of shock and tissue hypoperfusion.
