    Summary

Neutralizing antibodies against human enterovirus type 70 were detected in various domestic animals in Japan. These antibodies, primarily IgM, suggest exposure to related viruses in these animal populations.

    Area of Science:

    • Virology
    • Immunology
    • Veterinary Medicine

    Background:

    • Human enterovirus type 70 (HEV70) is a significant human pathogen.
    • Understanding the circulation of HEV70 or related viruses in animal populations is crucial for public health.
    • Domestic animals can act as reservoirs or sentinels for viral infections.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence of neutralizing activity against HEV70 in sera from various domestic animals in Japan.
    • To characterize the nature of the neutralizing substance in animal sera.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum samples were collected from cattle, horses, sheep, goats, swine, and chickens.
    • Neutralizing activity against HEV70 was assessed.
    • Immunoglobulin class of neutralizing antibodies in bovine sera was identified using sucrose gradient centrifugation and immune gel electrophoresis.

    Main Results:

    • Neutralizing activity against HEV70 was detected in serum samples from all tested animal species.
    • The frequency of neutralizing activity varied significantly among different animal species and collection years.
    • In bovine sera, the neutralizing activity was predominantly associated with IgM antibodies.

    Conclusions:

    • Domestic animals in Japan possess antibodies capable of neutralizing HEV70.
    • The presence of IgM antibodies suggests recent or ongoing exposure to HEV70 or antigenically related viruses.
    • These findings indicate that domestic animals may be exposed to unidentified viruses antigenically related to HEV70.
