    Summary

    Irradiation did not affect femoral artery patency in rats after microsurgery. While radiation caused histological changes, these did not lead to early thrombosis in the small arteries.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of irradiation on the patency of femoral artery anastomosis in rats.
    • To determine if radiation-induced histological changes impact early microvascular surgical success.

    Main Methods:

    • Three groups of rats were used: two irradiated groups (6,000 R and 4,000 R) and one control group.
    • Femoral arteries were surgically repaired using microvascular techniques four weeks post-irradiation.
    • Vessel patency was assessed four weeks after the anastomosis procedure.

    Main Results:

    • No significant difference in femoral artery patency was observed between irradiated and control groups.
    • Histological examination revealed radiation effects, but these did not compromise early anastomotic patency.
    • The anatomical and physiological alterations from irradiation were insufficient to cause early thrombosis.

    • Preoperative irradiation, at the doses studied, does not appear to negatively impact early patency of microvascular femoral artery anastomosis.

    • Further research may explore long-term effects and different radiation doses or vessel types.
