Vasoactive intestinal peptide producing neuroblastoma.

D R Cooney, M L Voorhess, J E Fisher

    Journal of Pediatric Surgery
    |December 1, 1982
    PubMed
    Summary

Verner-Morrison syndrome, associated with neural crest tumors, was observed after neuroblastoma treatment. Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide shows promise as a diagnostic and prognostic marker for tumor maturation.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuro-oncology
    • Endocrinology
    • Pediatric Oncology

    Background:

    • Verner-Morrison syndrome is a rare condition typically linked to ganglioneuroma and ganglioneuroblastoma.
    • Neuroblastoma is a malignant tumor originating from neural crest cells, commonly affecting children.

    Observation:

    • This case report details a patient with Verner-Morrison syndrome occurring after neuroblastoma treatment and tumor maturation.
    • This presentation is exceptionally rare, with only one prior report of Verner-Morrison syndrome following neuroblastoma chemotherapy and maturation.

    Findings:

    • Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) levels were evaluated as a potential biomarker.
    • The study suggests VIP can serve as a diagnostic indicator for neural crest tumors.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Implications:

    • Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide may also function as a marker to monitor tumor maturation and predict an improving prognosis in neuroblastoma patients.
    • This highlights the potential utility of VIP in managing neural crest tumors and assessing treatment response.
