    Summary

    Human conjunctival papillomas were examined for human papillomavirus (HPV). While koilocytosis was common, only a small fraction of tumors showed detectable HPV viral antigen.

    Background:

    • Conjunctival papillomas are benign epithelial tumors affecting the eye.
    • Human papillomavirus (HPV) is known to cause various papillomas in different tissues.
    • The presence and role of HPV in conjunctival papillomas require further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the histopathological features of human conjunctival papillomas.
    • To detect the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) common antigen in these tumors.
    • To correlate koilocytosis with HPV presence in conjunctival specimens.

    Main Methods:

    • Histopathological examination of 41 human conjunctival papilloma specimens.
    • Immunohistochemical analysis using a peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique for genus-specific HPV antigen.
    • Evaluation for the presence of koilocytotic cells.

    Main Results:

    • Koilocytosis was observed in 24 out of 41 (58.5%) conjunctival papilloma specimens.
    • HPV common antigen was detected in only 2 out of 41 (4.9%) specimens.
    • Positive viral antigen reactions were localized intranuclearly in the superficial epithelial layers.

    Conclusions:

    • While koilocytosis is a frequent finding in conjunctival papillomas, it is not a definitive marker for HPV infection in this location.
    • The low prevalence of detectable HPV antigen suggests that HPV may play a limited or specific role in the etiology of some conjunctival papillomas.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the precise role of HPV in conjunctival tumorigenesis.
