    Summary

    Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is linked to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HBV-infected cells show distinct morphologic changes, including enlarged nuclei and altered cell arrangements, suggesting they are precancerous.

    Background:

    • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development is often associated with Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.
    • Preneoplastic changes like hyperplasia and dysplasia are observed in hepatocytes of HCC patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantitatively assess morphologic changes in Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive hepatocytes.
    • To determine the association between these changes and HBV-infected cells in the context of HCC development.

    Main Methods:

    • Morphometric analysis of HBsAg-positive and HBsAg-negative hepatocytes.
    • Measurement of nuclear and cytoplasmic diameters using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method.
    • Comparison with control groups including HBsAg-negative patients with normal liver or alcoholic cirrhosis.
