    Summary

    Peripheral blood lymphocytes from rheumatoid arthritis patients with active disease showed increased interleukin production and proliferation. These abnormalities were linked to disease onset or exacerbation, suggesting a role in rheumatoid arthritis pathogenesis.

    Background:

    • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by joint inflammation.
    • The role of interleukin (IL) production by peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) in active RA is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate IL production and responsiveness in PBL from RA patients.
    • To determine if IL abnormalities correlate with disease activity or duration.

    Main Methods:

    • Collected PBL from 14 RA patients and 9 controls.
    • Assessed IL production using a mouse thymocyte assay.
    • Measured PBL proliferation in response to IL-containing supernatant.

    Main Results:

    • PBL from RA patients produced significantly more IL and showed enhanced proliferation compared to controls.

  • PBL from RA patients with stable disease produced and responded to IL normally.
