    Background:

    • The dexamethasone suppression test (DST) is a diagnostic tool used in psychiatry.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of the dexamethasone suppression test (DST) in diagnosing major depression.
    • To explore the relationship between DST results and depressive subtypes, including psychosis and melancholia.

    Main Methods:

    • Administered the dexamethasone suppression test (DST) to 47 inpatients diagnosed with DSM-III criteria.
    • Measured serum cortisol concentrations post-dexamethasone administration.
    • Analyzed DST nonsuppression rates across different diagnostic groups and depressive subtypes.

    • 77% of major depression patients (23 out of 30) exhibited DST nonsuppression.
