Double versus single contrast gastrointestinal radiology.

S M Williams, R K Harned

    Current Problems in Diagnostic Radiology

    Summary

Air contrast examinations improve the detection of gastric polyps and early cancers. For colon examinations, air contrast barium enema (BE) is superior for identifying polyps and small carcinomas, especially in high-risk patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Radiology
    • Gastroenterology
    • Diagnostic Imaging

    Background:

    • Standard upper gastrointestinal (UGI) examinations are common.
    • Air contrast techniques offer potential advantages in specific diagnostic scenarios.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of air contrast examinations for the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, and colon.
    • To compare air contrast techniques with standard methods for detecting various gastrointestinal pathologies.

    Main Methods:

    • Routine air contrast examination of the upper GI tract.
    • Air contrast barium enema (BE) for colonic evaluation.
    • Comparison with standard filled views and fluoroscopy.

    Main Results:

    • Air contrast is superior for detecting small gastric polyps and early gastric carcinoma.
    • Air contrast BE excels in identifying colonic polyps and small carcinomas.
    • Effectiveness for peptic ulcers and esophagitis is not definitively proven.
    • Combined approaches may offer the most accurate routine examination.

    Conclusions:

    • Air contrast examination is a valuable tool, particularly for gastric and colonic lesion detection.
    • Air contrast BE should be integrated into the evaluation of high-risk patients for colorectal cancer.
    • Thorough bowel preparation and meticulous technique are crucial for accurate colon examinations regardless of method.
