[Changes in the lungs and pleura during infection with Serratia marcescens]
Abstract:
Morphological changes predominantly in the lungs in two infants and a fetus when Serratia marcescens and simultaneously other gram-negative microorganisms were isolated from tissues are described. The localization of the process and the detection of the microorganisms are demonstrated. The presence of fields of hemolysed blood in alveoli, infiltration with predominance of plasma cells and macrophages in the periphery of the focus may be used as the basis for diagnosis. Contact microscopy detects microorganisms on the surface of the pleura more readily than in the lung tissues.
