    Summary

    A novel protein band found in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) gamma-globulin region is unique to CSF and not present in serum. This discovery advances understanding of CSF protein composition.

    Background:

    • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis is crucial for diagnosing neurological disorders.
    • Understanding the normal protein composition of CSF is essential for identifying abnormalities.

    Observation:

    • High-resolution zone electrophoresis of normal human CSF revealed a consistent, electrophoretically homogeneous protein band in the gamma-globulin region.
    • Immunofixation electrophoresis using specific antibodies against human serum proteins and immunoglobulins did not identify this band.

    Findings:

    • The observed protein band in CSF did not react with antibodies against known serum proteins or immunoglobulins.
    • This unique CSF protein band was absent in the corresponding serum samples from the same individuals.

    Implications:

    • This finding suggests the existence of a novel, CSF-specific protein not originating from serum.
    • Further characterization of this protein may provide new biomarkers for neurological conditions.
    • This research expands the knowledge of the human proteome within the central nervous system.
