Oral candidiasis: pathogenesis and host defense.

J B Epstein, E L Truelove, K T Izutzu

    Reviews of Infectious Diseases

    Summary

Oral candidiasis, a recurring infection, can lead to severe local and systemic disease in immunocompromised individuals. Salivary antibodies may prevent fungal adherence and aggregation, offering a novel defense mechanism.

    Area of Science:

    • Oral immunology
    • Infectious diseases
    • Microbiology

    Background:

    • Oral candidiasis is a common, chronic, and recurring infection.
    • Oral Candida can cause local and systemic disease, especially in compromised hosts.
    • Local oral defenses include epithelial barriers, saliva, and antimicrobial components.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To explore the role of salivary immunoglobulins in oral candidiasis.
    • To understand the mechanisms of host defense against Candida in the oral cavity.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of existing literature on oral candidiasis and host defense mechanisms.
    • Analysis of the potential functions of salivary antibodies against Candida.

    Main Results:

    • Salivary antibodies against Candida may not rely on complement or phagocytes.
    • Specific antibodies might aggregate Candida, preventing mucosal adherence.

    Conclusions:

    • Salivary antibodies play a crucial role in preventing oral Candida colonization.
    • Understanding these mechanisms can inform strategies for managing oral candidiasis.
