    Computed tomography (CT) is highly sensitive for detecting hepatic abscesses, identifying abnormalities in 97% of cases. However, CT scans often lack specific features, making diagnosis challenging.

    Background:

    • Hepatic abscesses are serious infections requiring prompt diagnosis.
    • Computed tomography (CT) is a common imaging modality used for abdominal pathologies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of CT in diagnosing hepatic abscesses.
    • To describe the characteristic CT findings of hepatic abscesses.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 50 CT scans from 33 patients with 37 hepatic abscess episodes.
    • Analysis of CT findings including lesion characteristics, presence of gas, and rim enhancement.

    Main Results:

    • CT detected abnormalities in 97% of hepatic abscess cases.
    • A characteristic CT appearance was not consistently evident, with varied lesion presentations.
    • Gas within the abscess was observed in only 19%, and rim enhancement in 6%.

    Conclusions:

    • CT is a sensitive tool for detecting hepatic abscesses.
    • The nonspecific CT findings can sometimes mimic other hepatic lesions, including neoplasms.
