    Summary

    Computerized axial tomography (CT) scans with iodine enhancement improve brain abscess detection. However, some lesions may still be missed by CT scans but visualized with radionuclide imaging.

    Background:

    Observation:

    • A large frontal lobe abscess was initially detected as a nonspecific decreased density on CT scans.
    • Iodine enhancement improved CT scan identification of the frontal lobe abscess.
    • A smaller parietal lobe lesion was not delineated by CT scans, even with iodine enhancement.

    Findings:

    • Radionuclide scans detected both brain abscesses but did not provide pathological identification.
    • CT scans with iodine enhancement are recommended for suspected brain abscesses.
    • Some brain abscesses may evade detection by CT scans, necessitating complementary imaging.
