Abnormal chromosomes in histocytic lymphoma.

K O Goh, M A Herrmann

The American Journal of the Medical Sciences
    |July 1, 1984
    PubMed
    Summary

Cytogenetic abnormalities, including large acrocentric (LAC) and large submetacentric (LSC) chromosomes, are common in diffuse histocytic lymphoma. These chromosomal changes are detectable even in morphologically normal bone marrow and peripheral blood, aiding diagnosis.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Cytogenetics
    • Hematology

    Background:

    • Diffuse histocytic lymphoma (DHL) is an aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
    • Accurate diagnosis and staging are crucial for effective treatment selection.

    Observation:

    • Cytogenetic analysis was performed on six DHL patients.
    • Chromosomal abnormalities were identified in five of the six patients.

    Findings:

    • Four patients exhibited abnormal clones.
    • Three patients presented with a large acrocentric chromosome (LAC), identified as 14q+.
    • One patient showed an abnormal large submetacentric chromosome (LSC), identified as 4q+.

    Implications:

    • Chromosomal abnormalities in DHL can be detected in various tissues, including morphologically normal bone marrow and peripheral blood.
    • Integrating cytogenetic studies into the diagnostic workup of suspected DHL is recommended for improved staging and treatment planning.
