    Wild bobcats carry a piroplasm parasite that causes fatal cytauxzoonosis in domestic cats. This study confirms bobcats as natural hosts, suggesting their parasite is the same species responsible for severe feline disease.

    Background:

    • Cytauxzoon felis is a protozoan parasite causing fatal cytauxzoonosis in domestic cats.
    • The natural reservoir and transmission dynamics of Cytauxzoon felis remain incompletely understood.
    • Bobcats (Lynx rufus rufus) are suspected carriers of Cytauxzoon felis.

    Observation:

    • Wild bobcats infected with an intraerythrocytic piroplasm, indistinguishable from Cytauxzoon felis, were identified.
    • Bobcats remained asymptomatic despite persistent parasitemia.
    • Inoculation of bobcat blood into domestic cats resulted in parasitemia and fatal disease in one recipient.

    Findings:

    • Domestic cats experimentally infected with bobcat-derived piroplasms developed erythroparasitemia.
    • One experimentally infected domestic cat succumbed to disease with lesions characteristic of fatal cytauxzoonosis.
    • Bobcats inoculated with virulent Cytauxzoon felis did not exhibit clinical signs, indicating resistance.

    Implications:

    • The bobcat serves as a natural host for the Cytauxzoon felis organism.
    • The piroplasm found in bobcats is likely the intraerythrocytic stage of Cytauxzoon felis.
    • Understanding bobcat-Cytauxzoon felis interactions is crucial for managing feline cytauxzoonosis.
