    Background:

    • The efficacy of sodium aurothiomalate and d-penicillamine may be linked to sulphydryl group activity.
    • Free thiomalate is liberated in vivo from sodium aurothiomalate and detected in patients' blood and urine.
    • Both sodium aurothiomalate and penicillamine increase intracellular glutathione levels, suggesting a role for thiol properties.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of thiols, specifically sodium thiomalate, in therapeutic efficacy.
    • To evaluate the clinical effectiveness and safety of sodium thiomalate treatment.
    • To question the established role of gold in chrysotherapy.

    Main Methods:

    • Detection of free thiomalate in blood and urine of patients treated with sodium aurothiomalate.
    • Measurement of intracellular glutathione levels following treatment with sodium aurothiomalate and penicillamine.
    • A pilot clinical trial administering sodium thiomalate to patients.
