    Summary

Septate junctions in malacoplakia phagocytic cells show a honeycomb pattern. These findings suggest a pathological membrane organization in digestive organelles.

    Area of Science:

    • Cell Biology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Malacoplakia is a rare chronic granulomatous disease.
    • Phagocytic cells are key players in the immune response and cellular digestion.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the ultrastructure of septate junctions in phagocytic cells from human malacoplakia.
    • To investigate the organization of membrane components within digestive organelles in this condition.

    Main Methods:

    • Transmission electron microscopy was used to examine cellular structures.
    • Detailed ultrastructural analysis of phagocytic cells from malacoplakia tissue samples.

    Main Results:

    • Typical septate junctions were observed between digestive vacuoles in malacoplakia phagocytes.
    • Evidence of a honeycomb pattern composed of hexagonal subunits was found in the junctional cleft material.
    • These junctions were specific to digestive vacuoles and not found in other organelles or cell types.

    Conclusions:

    • The observed septate junctions may represent a pathological alteration.
    • This suggests a potential change in the organization of membrane components within digestive organelles during malacoplakia.
