    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Addiction Medicine
    • Neuroscience

    Background:

    • Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic relapsing condition.
    • Long-term sobriety is a primary treatment goal for alcoholism.
    • The psychological sequelae of sustained abstinence require further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence and onset of depressive symptoms in individuals with a history of alcoholism who have achieved long-term sobriety.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 72 individuals with a history of alcoholism was assessed.
    • Participants had abstained from alcohol for a mean duration of 64 months.
    • Data collection focused on the presence and timing of serious depressive symptoms.

    Main Results:

    • 15% of the abstinent individuals reported serious, debilitating depressive symptoms.
    • These depressive symptoms emerged after a mean of 35 months of sobriety.
    • The findings indicate a delayed onset of depression in some individuals post-abstinence.

    Conclusions:

    • Sustained abstinence from alcohol does not preclude the development of significant depressive symptoms.
    • Delayed-onset depression may be a clinical consideration in the long-term management of alcoholism.
    • Further research is warranted to explore the mechanisms and risk factors for post-abstinence depression.
