J Pe'er, M Ilsar, A Hidayat

    The British Journal of Ophthalmology
    |September 1, 1984

    Summary

This report details a rare conjunctival myxoma in an 18-year-old female, presenting as a nasal bulbar mass. Histological analysis revealed characteristic spindle cells within a mucoid stroma, with no recurrence observed post-surgery.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Conjunctival myxomas are rare benign tumors.
    • This case highlights a unique presentation in a young adult.

    Observation:

    • An 18-year-old female presented with a painless mass on the nasal bulbar conjunctiva.
    • The mass was surgically excised.

    Findings:

    • Histopathology revealed spindle and stellate cells within a loose, mucoid stroma.
    • Intracytoplasmic vacuoles (dilated rough endoplasmic reticulum) and intranuclear vacuoles were noted.
    • Presence of mast cells in the stroma was also observed.

    Implications:

    • This case expands the understanding of conjunctival myxoma morphology.
    • Successful surgical management without recurrence is demonstrated.
    • Further research into the cellular mechanisms of conjunctival myxomas may be warranted.
