    Summary

    Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients with ileostomies have a high risk of developing gallstones (cholelithiasis). Gallbladder imaging is recommended, and prophylactic cholecystectomy may be considered for women over 50.

    Background:

    • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects the digestive tract.
    • Ileostomies are surgical procedures often used for IBD management.
    • Cholelithiasis (gallstones) is a potential complication.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the prevalence of cholelithiasis in patients with IBD and ileostomies.
    • To assess the need for gallbladder imaging in this patient population.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective study of 152 patients with IBD and ileostomies.
    • Review of medical records for cholelithiasis diagnoses.
    • Sonographic examination for follow-up in a subset of patients.

    • 10.5% of patients had pre-existing or concurrent cholelithiasis.
