    Summary

    Sympathetic nerve stimulation significantly reduces intestinal capillary pressure and filtration rate. Contrary to prior beliefs, autoregulation does not occur, with capillary derecruitment being the primary factor.

    Background:

    • Sympathetic nerve stimulation is thought to maintain intestinal capillary pressure and filtration rate through resistance adjustments.
    • The 'escape phase' phenomenon suggests a complex response to sustained nerve stimulation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To directly investigate the effects of sympathetic nerve stimulation on intestinal capillary pressure and filtration rate.
    • To determine if autoregulation mechanisms are active during sympathetic stimulation of the intestine.

    Main Methods:

    • Measurements of lymph flow, capillary pressure, capillary filtration coefficient, and transcapillary oncotic pressure gradient in feline small intestine.
    • Periarterial nerve stimulation was applied, with measurements taken during the steady-state phase.
    • Venous outflow pressure was maintained at a constant 0 mmHg throughout the experiment.
