    Summary

    A rare case of hyperthyroidism in a young woman was caused by breast cancer metastasizing to the thyroid. The cancer stimulated thyroid hormone release without affecting iodine uptake, suggesting a localized mechanism.

    Background:

    • Hyperthyroidism is a condition characterized by excessive thyroid hormone production.

    Observation:

    • Despite elevated thyroid hormone levels, radioactive iodine uptake by the thyroid was undetectable.

    Findings:

    • The thyroid gland showed diffuse tumor infiltration with intact thyroid follicles.
    • Elevated blood thyroid hormone levels (thyroxine and triiodothyronine) were observed.
    • Low radioactive iodine uptake indicated suppressed thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels.

    Implications:

    • The findings suggest that the breast adenocarcinoma produced a substance that stimulated thyroid hormone release independently of TSH.
    • This case highlights an unusual mechanism of hormone overproduction in metastatic thyroid disease.
    • Understanding this localized stimulatory effect could offer new insights into endocrine-neoplastic interactions and potential therapeutic targets.
