    Summary

This study introduces a simple, non-invasive method to measure gastric emptying of solid meals using radioisotope-labeled chicken liver. Normal emptying times were established in healthy adults, and posture effects were investigated.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Nuclear Medicine
    • Clinical Diagnostics

    Background:

    • Assessing gastric emptying is crucial for diagnosing gastrointestinal motility disorders.
    • Current methods can be invasive or complex for routine clinical use.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe a simple, non-invasive technique for measuring solid meal gastric emptying in clinical settings.
    • To establish normal gastric emptying times for a solid meal in asymptomatic adults.
    • To investigate the influence of posture on gastric emptying.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized cooked chicken liver labeled with a radioisotope as the solid meal.
    • Administered the labeled meal to 11 healthy adult volunteers.
    • Measured gastric emptying using radioisotope detection techniques.
    • Evaluated the impact of different body postures on emptying rates.

    Main Results:

    • Successfully developed and described a straightforward, non-invasive method for gastric emptying measurement.
    • Determined the range of normal gastric emptying times for the specified solid meal in the study population.
    • Observed and documented the effects of posture on the rate of solid meal emptying.

    Conclusions:

    • The described radioisotope technique offers a practical, non-invasive approach for clinical assessment of solid gastric emptying.
    • Provides baseline data for normal gastric emptying times and highlights the role of posture.
    • This method has potential for routine use in evaluating patients with suspected gastric motility abnormalities.
