    Summary

This pilot study found that an engineered pool therapy program significantly improved endurance in older adults. While it aimed to shift aging perceptions and build social networks, these attitudinal changes were not statistically significant.

    Area of Science:

    • Gerontology
    • Physical Therapy
    • Health Management

    Background:

    • Addressing care inadequacies for the elderly, especially with staffing constraints.
    • Incorporating a total health concept in geriatric care.
    • Challenging misconceptions about aging and promoting social integration.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate an engineered pool therapy program's effectiveness for the elderly.
    • To assess impacts on physical fitness, attitudinal changes, and social networking.
    • To explore a novel approach to geriatric care under resource limitations.

    Main Methods:

    • An eight-week pilot study with ten elderly participants.
    • Utilized an engineered pool therapy program with unique participant pairing.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Assessed attitudinal changes using the Palmore "Facts on Aging Quiz" and physical measurements (strength, range of motion, flexibility, endurance).
  • Main Results:

    • Significant improvement observed in participant endurance performance.
    • No statistically significant difference found in attitudinal changes regarding aging.
    • Physical fitness, particularly endurance, showed positive trends.

    Conclusions:

    • The engineered pool therapy program demonstrated a significant positive impact on endurance.
    • Further research with randomized sampling and control groups is recommended to confirm findings.
    • The program's potential for improving elderly physical fitness warrants continued investigation.
