[Growth and growth hormone in children with congenital lip and palatal clefts]
Insights
This study found no significant link between cleft lip and palate in children and growth hormone deficiency. Researchers recommend testing hormone levels only in children experiencing reduced growth.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric endocrinology
- Genetics and developmental biology
Context:
- Cleft lip and palate are common congenital conditions.
- Previous research suggested a potential link with growth hormone deficiency.
Purpose:
- To investigate the correlation between cleft lip and palate (CLP) and growth hormone deficiency (GHD).
- To determine serum growth hormone levels in children with CLP.
Summary:
- 199 children with CLP were assessed for serum growth hormone levels.
- No significant correlation was found between CLP and GHD.
- All participants exhibited normal growth hormone concentrations.
Impact:
- Challenges previous findings on CLP and GHD.
- Suggests targeted growth hormone testing for children with CLP exhibiting growth issues.
- Informs clinical practice for managing children with cleft conditions.
Abstract:
In order to investigate the correlation supposed between cleft lip and palate of children and growth hormone deficiency we determined the amount of growth hormone in the blood serum of 199 children with cleft lip and palate and partly with other additional diseases. In contrast to a previous result we could not find a significant relation between the cleft-syndrome and growth hormone deficiency. All patients had a normal and sufficient concentration of the hormone. As result of our work we propose to determine the hormone concentration only in those cases in which less growth is observed too.
