Spontaneous hypnotic age regression: case report.

D Spiegel, A Rosenfeld

    The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry
    |December 1, 1984
    PubMed
    Summary

Spontaneous age regression, rarely seen as a primary symptom, was observed and treated in a 16-year-old girl using hypnosis and psychotherapy. This case highlights the controllability of such dissociative phenomena.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Hypnotherapy
    • Dissociative Disorders

    Background:

    • Age regression, the experience of reliving the past, typically requires hypnotic suggestion.
    • Spontaneous age regression as a primary psychiatric symptom is exceptionally rare.

    Observation:

    • A 16-year-old female presented with spontaneous age regressions.
    • These regressions were accessible and controllable through hypnosis and psychotherapy.

    Findings:

    • The patient exhibited age-appropriate vocabulary, mental content, and affect during regressions.
    • Symptoms showed overlap and divergence with hysterical fugue and multiple personality disorder.

    Implications:

    • This case demonstrates that spontaneous age regression can be a primary symptom and is potentially manageable.
    • Understanding the nuances of this patient's presentation may inform differential diagnosis and treatment of dissociative disorders.
