    Summary

    Osteogenesis imperfecta does not prevent stapedectomy surgery for hearing loss. This study found stapedectomy is a predictable treatment for hearing loss in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta.

    Background:

    • Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by bone fragility.
    • Conductive hearing loss is a common complication of OI, often involving the middle ear ossicles.
    • Stapedectomy is a surgical procedure to restore hearing in cases of otosclerosis.

    Observation:

    • Thirty stapedectomies were performed on 24 patients diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta.
    • Surgical observations included thin ossicles, crural fractures, and unique footplate characteristics (thick, granular, mushy).
    • A novel observation was deficient, short crura in three patients, failing to contact the footplate.
