    Summary

    Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) showed poorer passive-avoidance performance than Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY), suggesting their previously reported superior avoidance learning may stem from higher activity, not better learning. Behavioral differences were linked to safe area discriminability.

    Background:

    • Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) often outperform Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) in avoidance tasks.
    • SHR display heightened activity in novel environments and after stress.
    • Previous studies suggest SHR have superior avoidance learning.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate SHR and WKY performance, behavior, and corticosterone levels in a passive-avoidance task.
    • To examine the influence of safe area discriminability on these measures.
    • To clarify if SHR's avoidance advantage is due to learning or activity levels.

    Main Methods:

    • Young male SHR and WKY rats were tested in a passive-avoidance task.
    • Three levels of safe area discriminability were employed.
    • Behavior (ambulation, rearing, immobility) and plasma corticosterone were measured.

    Main Results:

    • SHR exhibited slightly lower passive-avoidance performance than WKY.
    • No significant differences in post-test plasma corticosterone were found between groups.
    • Behavioral responses varied with safe area discriminability; SHR showed more activity in high-discriminability conditions.

    Conclusions:

    • SHR's superior avoidance learning in prior studies may be attributed to elevated locomotor activity, not enhanced learning capacity.
    • SHR demonstrate a tendency for increased locomotor activity during activation.
    • SHR appear to retain normal stimulus discrimination abilities.
