This study presents a four-stage model for understanding diabetes mellitus clinical management from both physician and patient viewpoints. This systems model offers valuable insights into complex diabetes care challenges.

    Area of Science:

    • Medical Informatics
    • Health Services Research
    • Behavioral Medicine

    Background:

    • Understanding the complexities of clinical diabetes management requires integrating physician and patient perspectives.
    • Existing models may not fully capture the dynamic interactions within diabetes care.

    Observation:

    • Physician/patient pairs were interviewed regarding their views on diabetes mellitus management.
    • Content analysis and statement classification were employed to analyze interview data.

    Findings:

    • A four-stage model for clinical management was developed, classifying 98% of physician statements and 97% of patient statements.
    • This model, when combined with a systems description of diabetes, forms a unitary systems model for clinical management.
    • Video recordings and stimulated recall demonstrated the heuristic and explanatory potential of this systems view.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Implications:

    • The developed systems model provides a novel framework for analyzing and improving clinical diabetes management.
    • This approach can enhance understanding of challenging diabetes management scenarios.
    • It offers potential for optimizing patient-physician communication and treatment adherence in diabetes care.
