Adult stutterers exhibit prolonged brainstem central conduction times. This auditory pathway difference, measured by interpeak latency (IPL), was observed in most stutterers, regardless of stuttering severity.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Speech-language pathology
    • Auditory processing

    Background:

    • Stuttering is a complex speech disorder.
    • Auditory processing differences are suspected in stuttering.
    • Brainstem-evoked response testing (BER) assesses auditory pathway function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate auditory pathway function in adult stutterers using BER.
    • To compare central conduction time between stutterers and non-stutterers.

    Main Methods:

    • Brainstem-evoked response testing (BER) was conducted on 8 adult stutterers and 8 non-stutterers.
    • Interpeak latency (IPL) differences between Waves I to V were analyzed to measure central conduction time.

    Main Results:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • Stutterers showed significantly prolonged central conduction time compared to non-stutterers.
    • Abnormalities were unilateral in 5 stutterers and bilateral in 3.
    • No correlation was found between BER findings and stuttering severity.

    Conclusions:

    • Adult stutterers may have prolonged central auditory conduction time.
    • BER can reveal subclinical auditory processing differences in stuttering.
    • These findings contribute to understanding the neurophysiological underpinnings of stuttering.
