    Background:

    • Monocular rivalry (MR) describes the perceptual competition between two different images presented to each eye.
    • Existing theories struggle to fully explain the dynamic shifts in perception during MR.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To test the eye-movement/afterimage theory of monocular rivalry.
    • To investigate the role of eye movements and afterimages in perceptual dominance and contrast fluctuations.

    Main Methods:

    • Three experiments measured perceptual dominance and contrast fluctuations of gratings.
    • A fourth experiment manipulated eye movements to assess angular selectivity.
    • Data were analyzed in conjunction with existing afterimage data.

    Main Results:

    • Perceptual dominance and contrast fluctuations were strongly dependent on preceding eye movements, as predicted.
    • Angular selectivity of these fluctuations was eliminated by specific eye movements.
    • Fixation-contingent fluctuations were consistent across different angles (15 and 90 degrees).

    Conclusions:

    • The findings provide strong support for the eye-movement/afterimage theory of monocular rivalry.
    • The results address and resolve several recent challenges to the theory.
    • Eye movements play a critical role in modulating visual perception during monocular rivalry.
