Background:

Unusual brownish pigmentation on bony prominences was observed in 23 cases.
The condition predominantly affected young to middle-aged females.

Observation:

Pigmentation patterns included ripples on the back/clavicles, zebra-like on ribs, and postage-stamp macules on the vertebrae.
No inflammatory signs like itching or scaling were present.

Findings:

Histology confirmed postinflammatory melanin deposits in the upper dermis.
One case showed secondary amyloid deposit, possibly due to resolved epidermal damage.

Implications:

Friction melanosis is a distinct pigmentary disorder, separate from other melanoses and macular amyloidosis.
The condition is likely caused by repeated friction from nylon towels or brushes.
