    Summary

    Alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) influences coat color in viable yellow mice. However, natural coat darkening at puberty does not correlate with increased alpha-MSH levels, suggesting other regulatory factors.

    Background:

    • Viable yellow mice (C3H/He-A*vy) exhibit coat color changes at puberty.
    • Alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) is a key regulator of pigmentation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of alpha-MSH in regulating coat color in viable yellow mice.
    • To explore the relationship between alpha-MSH levels and coat darkening.
    • To examine the effects of pharmacological agents on coat color regulation.

    Main Methods:

    • Administration of alpha-MSH to mice.
    • Plucking hair to observe regrowth patterns.
    • Measurement of plasma alpha-MSH levels.
    • Treatment with bromocryptine, apomorphine, and melatonin.

    Main Results:
