    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Neurology
    • Canine Oncology
    • Comparative Pathology

    Background:

    • Lymphosarcoma, a type of cancer, can affect the central nervous system in dogs.
    • Diagnosis often involves neurological signs like seizures and multifocal central nervous system involvement.

    Observation:

    • Eight dogs diagnosed with central nervous system lymphosarcoma presented with seizures.
    • Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed elevated white blood cell counts with abnormal lymphoid cells in all cases.
    • Five dogs also showed high protein concentration in their cerebrospinal fluid.

    Findings:

    • Two dogs received systemic anticancer chemotherapy.
    • Four dogs were treated with a combination of systemic chemotherapy, intrathecal cytosine arabinoside, and craniospinal irradiation.
    • The combination therapy resulted in marked improvement of clinical signs.

    Implications:

    • Multifocal central nervous system lymphosarcoma is a treatable condition in dogs.
    • Combination therapy including chemotherapy and radiation may offer significant clinical benefits.
    • Further research into optimal treatment protocols for canine CNS lymphosarcoma is warranted.
