    Summary

    Reiter's syndrome (RS) is often triggered by infections. Sexually transmitted diseases, including chlamydial infections, are significantly more common in RS patients, suggesting a key role in disease development.

    Background:

    • Reiter's syndrome (RS), also known as reactive arthritis, is a form of inflammatory arthritis.
    • The exact triggers for RS are not fully understood, but infections are suspected to play a role.

    Observation:

    • A study investigated 72 males with RS and compared them to 219 controls.
    • Infections of the throat, nose, or lungs were equally reported in both groups.
    • However, joint manifestations following these infections were significantly more frequent in RS patients.

    Findings:

    • A history of genitourinary infections, including prostatitis, gonorrhea, and Chlamydia trachomatis, was significantly more prevalent in RS patients.
    • Chlamydial infection was identified in 61% of RS patients.
    • Gastrointestinal infections were less common triggers.

    Implications:

    • These findings highlight the significant role of sexually transmitted diseases as etiologic agents in Reiter's syndrome.
    • Further research into the immunopathogenesis of RS is warranted, focusing on the link between specific infections and autoimmune responses.
