The careful control of the maternal blood glucose levels reduces complications in the newborn. HBGM has the additional value of reducing the need for emergency care for diabetic ketoacidosis or insulin shock, because morbid trends often are reversed before they become serious. Certainly, the advent of simple techniques for home blood glucose monitoring is a major step forward in the effort to improve the outcome of diabetes complicated pregnancies.
