W Knezevic, W M Carroll

Australian and New Zealand Journal of Medicine
    |December 1, 1983

    Summary

Acyclovir is an antiviral for herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE). Relapse occurred after a standard course, but extended treatment led to sustained improvement, highlighting the need for prolonged therapy.

    Area of Science:

    • Virology
    • Neurology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) is a severe neurological condition.
    • Acyclovir is a well-tolerated antiviral agent for HSE treatment.
    • The optimal duration of Acyclovir therapy for HSE is under evaluation.

    Observation:

    • This study documents a case of HSE recurrence after a standard course of Acyclovir.
    • The patient experienced a relapse of encephalitis despite initial treatment.

    Findings:

    • An extended course of Acyclovir resulted in rapid and sustained clinical improvement.
    • Minimal residual neurological deficits were observed following prolonged Acyclovir therapy.

    Implications:

    • Prolonged Acyclovir treatment may be necessary for managing HSE.
    • Clinicians should be aware of the potential for HSE relapse even after Acyclovir treatment.
    • Further research is needed to establish optimal Acyclovir treatment durations for HSE.
