Basal body temperature graph and the luteal phase defect.

K A Downs, M Gibson

    Summary

Basal body temperature (BBT) charting can help diagnose luteal phase defect (LPD). A luteal phase shorter than 11 days on a BBT chart strongly suggests LPD, while the temperature shift slope is not a reliable indicator.

    Area of Science:

    • Reproductive Endocrinology
    • Gynecology

    Background:

    • Luteal phase defect (LPD) is a common cause of infertility.
    • Accurate diagnosis of LPD is crucial for effective treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility of basal body temperature (BBT) charting in diagnosing luteal phase defect (LPD).
    • To compare luteal phase length and BBT patterns between women with and without LPD.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of BBT charts from three menstrual cycles for 20 normal women and 20 women with biopsy-proven LPD.
    • Analysis of luteal phase length and the rate of postovulatory BBT rise.

    Main Results:

    • Women with LPD had significantly shorter mean luteal phases (11.8 days) compared to normal women (13.4 days).
    • 30% of LPD patients exhibited luteal phases under 11 days on BBT charts, correlating with endometrial biopsy findings.
    • No significant difference was observed in the rate of postovulatory BBT rise between groups.

    Conclusions:

    • A luteal phase duration of less than 11 days on BBT charts is a strong indicator of LPD.
    • The slope of the postovulatory temperature shift is not a reliable diagnostic marker for LPD.
