Summary

Children with reading difficulties may not have a pervasive phonetic coding deficit. This deficiency appears less pronounced in marginal readers when letters are presented auditorily, challenging previous assumptions.

Background:

Recent studies indicate children with reading disorders exhibit phonetic coding deficits.
This deficiency is observed irrespective of whether letters are presented visually or auditorily.
The phonetic-deficit hypothesis posits a core issue in phonological processing for reading difficulties.

Purpose of the Study:

To further investigate the phonetic-deficit hypothesis in reading disorders.
To compare phonetic coding abilities between marginally competent and good readers.
To examine the influence of presentation modality (visual vs. auditory) on phonetic coding.

Main Methods:

Participants included 16 marginally competent readers and 16 good readers.
The task involved recalling sequences of rhyming or nonrhyming letters.
Letter sequences were presented through either visual or auditory modalities.

Main Results:

Marginal readers demonstrated less phonetic coding than good readers across both visual and auditory presentations.
Separate analyses revealed that marginal readers could engage in phonetic coding, particularly with auditory input.
This suggests the phonetic-coding deficit may not be as universal as previously thought.

Conclusions:

The phonetic-coding deficit in subaverage readers might be less pervasive than previously suggested.
Auditory presentation may facilitate phonetic coding in marginal readers.
Findings warrant a nuanced understanding of phonological processing in reading disorders.
