    Background:

    • Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a common response to unaccustomed exercise.
    • Previous research indicated disorganized myofibrillar material in sore muscles.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To provide morphological data supporting previous findings on DOMS.
    • To investigate the structural changes in muscle fibers following eccentric exercise.

    Main Methods:

    • Muscle biopsies were taken from 12 males experiencing severe thigh soreness 18-72 hours post-eccentric exercise.
    • Knee extensor strength was measured at various angular velocities.
    • Muscle biopsies were analyzed for structural changes at the myofibrillar level.

    • Muscle soreness was associated with Z-band disturbances (streaming, broadening, disruption) in myofibrils.
