Peridurography with metrizamide: animal and human studies
Metrizamide (300 mg/ml) is a safe and effective contrast agent for spinal peridurography. This diagnostic procedure showed satisfactory radiographic contrast with no adverse effects in conscious dogs and humans.
Area of Science:
- Radiology
- Medical Imaging
- Neuroradiology
Background:
- Spinal peridurography is a diagnostic imaging technique.
- Evaluating contrast agents for safety and efficacy is crucial.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the safety and diagnostic utility of metrizamide for spinal peridurography.
- To evaluate metrizamide's performance in conscious canine and human subjects.
Main Methods:
- Metrizamide (300 mg/ml) was administered epidurally.
- Evaluated for irritation, discomfort, radiographic contrast, and sequelae in dogs and humans.
Main Results:
- Epidural metrizamide was non-irritating up to 12 ml volumes.
- Larger volumes caused mild discomfort in two human patients.
- Satisfactory radiographic contrast was achieved with no reported sequelae.
Conclusions:
- Metrizamide (300 mg/ml) is a safe and useful contrast agent for spinal peridurography.
- The procedure is well-tolerated in ambulant patients, offering diagnostic value.
