This study explored the link between creativity and ambiguous figure reversal rates in architecture students. Results suggest self-perceived creativity, not figure reversal, correlates with external creativity assessments.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Cognitive Science

    Background:

    • Previous research indicated a link between self-perceived creativity and ambiguous figure reversal rates.
    • However, external measures of creativity have not consistently shown a relationship with figure reversal rates.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To replicate and extend previous findings on creativity and ambiguous figure reversal.
    • To investigate the relationship between external creativity assessments and figure reversal rates.

    Main Methods:

    • 48 senior architecture students self-rated their creativity and passively viewed ambiguous figures.
    • Professors also ranked students' creativity based on established criteria.
    • Figure reversal rates were recorded during passive viewing of ambiguous stimuli.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • A positive correlation was found between students' self-perceived creativity and their figure reversal rates.
    • No significant relationship emerged between professors' external creativity rankings and figure reversal rates.

    Conclusions:

    • Self-perceptions of creativity may be more closely linked to ambiguous figure reversal than objectively measured creativity.
    • Further research is needed to clarify the complex relationship between creativity, perception, and cognitive processing.
