    Summary

    Asthmatic patients experienced lung collapse (atelectasis), often recurring in children. Oral corticosteroids may help speed lung re-expansion in these cases.

    Background:

    • Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition affecting millions worldwide.
    • Atelectasis, or lung collapse, is a known complication of various respiratory conditions.

    Observation:

    • Five pediatric asthma patients presented with unilateral lung collapse.
    • Three patients experienced recurrent episodes of atelectasis.
    • Symptoms included localized chest pain and breathlessness, without wheezing or signs of infection.

    Findings:

    • The episodes of atelectasis were not directly linked to respiratory infections or asthma exacerbations.
    • The exact cause of lung collapse in these asthmatic patients remains unclear.

    Implications:

    • Oral corticosteroid therapy appears to facilitate lung re-expansion in asthmatic patients with atelectasis.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms and optimal management strategies.
